Alsace on the Medina
In September of 1844, French diplomat and pioneer Henri Castro guided Alsatian families to the fertile banks of the Medina River. They built a village that preserved their European language, culture, and timber-frame limestone architecture. Today, Castroville is a living museum of French-German heritage—just minutes from the resort.
Walk pecan-shaded streets past 75+ preserved 19th-century cottages, the Gothic-revival St. Louis Catholic Church, and the 1849 Landmark Inn—then return to the quiet of your site.
The Steinbach House
Originally built in Alsace, France, disassembled, shipped across the Atlantic, and rebuilt in Castroville in 1998 as a gift of friendship from Alsace.
The Landmark Inn
A riverside homestead, tavern, and gristmill that served as a critical stop for pioneer stagecoaches traveling west. Now a state historic site on the Medina.
St. Louis Catholic Church
A spectacular Gothic-Revival church built from hand-quarried native limestone between 1868 and 1870, its steeple rising above the tree canopy.
